“Hands Across South Madison” Grant Program:
Do you have an idea for a program for children and youth? Are you pondering where to get the funding for this project? Now, you can turn your inspiration into a reality. The Town of Madison (Town) and South Metropolitan Planning Council (SMPC) encourage you to apply for a grant as part of Community Services Initiatives – “Hands Across South Madison.”
Application Materials:
We encourage everyone – volunteer organizations, non-profits, neighborhood associations, and community members – to apply. Application materials can be obtained by contacting Jodi Wortsman at 260-8098 or smpcvc@terracom.net. You can request the materials in either electronic or paper format. (Application materials will not be sent automatically to previous grant applicants.) Questions are welcome and encouraged throughout the application process. We look forward to hearing from you and together building a stronger Southside community.
Purpose of Grant Program:
“Hands Across South Madison” promotes activities that develop children and youth, which include, but are not limited to, projects that support recreation, mentoring, education, job training and placement, intergenerational activities, family strengthening, and community building.
Amount:
Approximately $43,000 is available for distribution; however, this is dependent on successful fundraising efforts. You may apply for any amount. This year an upper limit for an award was not set. The committee will work with the funds available to ensure the greatest impact on the community. The review panel reserves the right to award the applicant less than the requested amount. Each applicant may submit only one application.
Timeline:
Proposals due Friday, February 12, 2010
Notification of awards Monday, April 26, 2010
Project contract period Tuesday, June 1 – Sunday, October 31, 2010
Geographic Area:
The project should focus on the inclusion of youth who live within the SMPC area. The SMPC serves residents who live within the following: northern boundary is Regent and Proudfit Streets (to railroad viaduct), Monona Bay, and Lake Monona; southern boundary is City of Fitchburg; eastern boundary is Yahara River and Mud Lake; and western boundary is the University of Wisconsin Arboretum on the west. (Examples of areas outside the SMPC boundary are City of Fitchburg and Allied neighborhood.)

Neighborhoods USA Neighborhood of the Year Award – Due February 15, 2010 Neighborhoods, USA (NUSA) is pleased to announce the opening of the competition for the 2010 Neighborhood of the Year Award. 2010 marks the 26th year that NUSA will recognize the outstanding work of neighborhood organizations all across the United States for their work in improving the quality of life in their communities. Any neighborhood association, homeowners association or business association is eligible to submit an application if your organization has developed and completed the implementation of a project that has benefited your neighborhood in 2009.
Previous national finalist projects included; hosting of various social events (picnic, ice cream social, porch parties) to bring neighbors together; creating a neighborhood watch program, revitalizing a neighborhood park, home improvements, developing a neighborhood plan, implementing a health fair to benefit seniors in the community. Entries postmarked no later than February 15, 2010 will be reviewed by a panel of national neighborhood leaders who will select no less than four finalists in each award category. NUSA is the largest non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to sharing information and experiences to build stronger communities.
