Sat, 31-Jul-2010 9:00 am (3:00 hrs) |
Greetings-
We are inviting you to participate in an Alder-initiated Neighborhood Summit, Saturday July 31 from 9am-noon, at Trinity Lutheran Church 1904 Winnebago to begin an initial discussion about the land use approval process from the point of view of neighbors and neighborhoods so that those of us elected to represent you can hear your thoughts and discuss suggestions on best practices with each other, other stakeholders and the city.
We are inviting fellow alders, members of citizen committees tasked with the review of development proposals, and members of neighborhood associations throughout the city to lead a roundtable discussion of what works and what could be improved in our development approval process. The primary focus is to provide a vehicle for neighbors to share experiences and insights in order to facilitate their participation in the process but all interested stakeholders are welcome to participate.
Tim Cooley, the Economic Development Director at the City, has invited neighborhood associations (NAs) to submit written comments to the Economic Development Commission (EDC). His email outlined the timeline regarding EDC’s review of the land use approval process. He has requested NAs to submit written comments by July 30 in order to be included in an August 18 Preliminary report to EDC, with final action by the council proposed for November 9.
At the roundtable, we will break into groups and go through a two part agenda: what is the problem and what are some solutions. Alders and committee members from Plan, Landmarks, Urban Design and Zoning Board of Appeals have been invited to help facilitate discussions at breakout tables. If your neighborhood association submitted comments to EDC, send a copy and we will make copies available at the meeting. The information we gather can be used throughout the process to insure a truly robust and inclusive discussion.
We realize this is short notice and it is being held on a summer Saturday but it is the first step and there will be future opportunities to talk. Several Alders have been discussing our role in the development process (alders are notably absent in recent documents) and possible recommendations we would like to consider as policy and in the upcoming budget process. We want your input. Please forward to neighborhood list serves and other interested parties.
We hope you can join us. Please RSVP Debbie Fields in the Council office dfields@cityofmadison.com or at 266-4297. Thanks for volunteering your time and passion to help build a great city.

| Urban League of Greater Madison’s Community Outreach Campaign | [ Tell a Friend ] |
Good Morning,
I am contacting you today because our President & CEO, Kaleem Caire, our Board of Directors, and our team would like to extend an invitation to you and your agency to get involved with the Urban League of Greater Madison’s Community Outreach Campaign. The campaign is aimed at gathering information about the current needs of its residents and the vision of its residents for the future of Madison. Madison’s Mayor Dave Cieslewicz has pledged to work in partnership with the Urban League on establishing a vision for the city that includes ideals, interests, needs, and values of all residents. The campaign is just the beginning of this process.
The outreach campaign will enable us to go much deeper and further than telephone or electronic polling of registered voters offers. Instead, this boots-on-the-ground campaign will involve volunteers discussing with residents, business owners, and passers-by issues and topics that define the community’s outlook on the present and future. Organizations and individuals who participate in the campaign will have the benefit of getting out into communities to talk with residents and build a sense of community. All individual and agency volunteers will receive a full report on what we learned at the end of the campaign.
By participating in this campaign, you will not only actively help to develop a deep understanding of our Greater Madison community, but also shape the future of our community as well. To support this effort, volunteers are needed to do the door-to-door and business outreach in targeted neighborhoods and commercial districts. Training and a t-shirt will be provided free of charge, and volunteers are only needed to commit to one (3 hour) shift every week for as many weeks as you can participate. This campaign is scheduled to run from the middle of July through the end of September 2010.
I hope that you and your agency will be able to join us in our efforts to enhance the sense of community, inclusion, and common understanding of our city’s value and purpose among all who live and work in the capital of the Badger State, and improve the quality of life and for all of our city’s children and families.
Please forward this call for volunteers to any service committees or engaged employees or patrons of your agency. We need all the support we can get to help shape Madison into a welcoming, supportive, and prosperous place for all people who make this their home.
If you, or any member of your agency have any questions, or wish to get involved, please contact me at aschilcher@ulgm.org or 608.729.1225.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

| Homeowner Deadline for New Smoke Alarms is August 15 | [ Tell a Friend ] |
The second half of the City of Madison’s new smoke alarm will take effect Sunday, August 15. The new ordinance passed by the City Council in March, 2009 requires smoke alarms with 10-year lithium batteries designed to last the life of the smoke alarm.
Under the newly adopted ordinance, all smoke alarms must have a 10-year battery in a tamper-resistant alarm unit, OR a hard-wired system with battery back-up.
9-volt batteries will no longer be used UNLESS they are being used as a battery back-up to a hard-wired alarm.
The ordinance requires additional alarms in the residence:
o In each bedroom or sleeping area
o Within six feet of each door leading to a bedroom or sleeping area of each unit
o On each floor of the building
The City of Madison Fire Department has been awarded a Fire Prevention and Safety grant to purchase and install more than 3,000 smoke alarms for homeowners who are at the greatest risk of injury or death in a fire. The United States Fire Administration considers young children, older adults, people with disabilities, and people living in poverty at highest risk.
The grant program, administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, enhances fire departments’ ability to protect the public and fire service personnel from fire and related hazards.
The City of Madison Fire Department received $35,268 to help at-risk residents receive early warning in the event of a fire in their home. Smoke alarms provide early warning of fires, allow people more time to safely escape, and reduce fire deaths and injuries. Early detection of fires often results in smaller fires which cause less property damage and present less danger to the firefighters who must respond to the fires.
The Madison Fire Department is working with community organizations to identify the homes needing smoke alarms. Members of Madison Fire Fighters Local 311 are helping to install the alarms in residents’ homes. Besides the alarms, residents will also receive fire safety information and materials.
Smoke alarm manufacturers First Alert and Kidde donated 348 smoke alarms to assist in this effort.
For more information, please contact the Madison Fire Department Community Education Office at 266-4709.

Food Forests and Madison Area
Community Land Trust providing bounce back during hard times!
A Food Forest is planned for the home at 1921 Beld Street. Picture yourself in a forest where almost everything around you is food. You can grow fruits, nuts, vegetables, herbs, and other useful plants in a way that mimics natural ecosystems. That means the garden takes care of itself, so you don’t have to spend time weeding it.
Madison Area Community Land Trust (MACLT) is planning to install a Food Forest at its home at 1921 Beld Street. “The urban agriculture approach at our award-winning Troy Gardens cohousing project is very popular,” says board member, Joann Kelley. “People understand that growing your own food makes sense. Not only do you get tasty, fresh food, it also means you do not have to solely depend upon food shipped to Madison from across the county or across the globe. The Gulf of Mexico oil disaster is reminding us just how fast our security can be shaken. Local food is part of being a sustainable and resilient community, and a food forest helps us to bounce back from ecological disasters and hard times.”
The home, which is currently for sale, is part of the MACLT. The land trust model offers affordable homes to current and future generations. “In the land trust model the homeowner buys the house but borrows the land,” explains MACLT executive director, Michael Carlson. “It is typically the cost of land that drives up housing costs. The MACLT buys the land on behalf of the homeowner and keeps it in a trust. Because they don’t have to purchase the land, MACLT homebuyers have lower mortgages, they pay less in mortgage interest, and they enjoy lower property taxes. The program works, and a typical Land Trust homeowner could expect to save up to $100,000 over the life of a 30-year mortgage loan. This helps all of the time but especially during hard times.”
As we go to print, the MACLT is finalizing the details of the Beld Street Food Forest. The project will provide educational and volunteer opportunities. For more information, contact MACLT at (608) 280-0131 or michael@affordablehome.org.

| Thut Park Celebration/Rededication Planned for August | [ Tell a Friend ] |
Thut Park Celebration/Rededication Planned for August
The Bridge-Lake Point –Waunona area is planning to celebrate the area’s newest park, Thut Park on August 28th, 2010. The first parcel of land was acquired in 1986. Sam and Mildred Thut (pronounced Toot) donated a parcel of land in 1989, hence the Thut Park name. Further land acquisitions were put on hold pending clean up of contamination from a gas station. But the final parcels were purchased in 2007. Thut Park is located on Nana Lane between Esther Beach Road and Raywood Road.
Come check it out. There is a new playground, shelter and basketball court. Soon the installation of the solar lights will be completed by MG&E along the bike path. Still to come is a kiosk, solar lighting for the shelter, a slide for the playground and a bubbler. Also planned are 3 rain gardens. The large open area will be home to a large general purpose field and a volleyball court. None of this would have been possible without the backing and planning of City of Madison Parks Department, the Madison Parks Foundation, and donations from many individuals and businesses. The committee thanks Alderperson Tim Bruer and State Senator Fred Risser for their support of this project.
Donations are still needed. Donations should be designated for Thut Park and should be sent to the Madison Parks Foundation, P.O. Box 2987, Madison, WI 53701-2987. No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible.
Put August 28th on your calendar. There will be food and activities
